Canada Watch
Even though Canada’s labour market has lost some of its lustre in recent months , it remains in an enviable position when compared other G7 economies. As today’s Hot Chart shows, the Canadian jobless rate is about a full percentage point lower than its U.S. counterpart when both rates are calculated on U.S.-based unemployment concept. As shown, this is the largest divergence since the 1975 U.S. recession. We do expect the ongoing global economic slowdown to put upward pressure on Canada’s unemployment rate in the coming months. This being said, we still think that the Canadian labour market will continue to outperform its G7 peers as to keep domestic demand growth in this country in positive territory.
